Feel the connection this World Psoriasis Day
October 29th is World Psoriasis Day, an annual event focused on raising awareness and support for those managing the disease. By inspiring everyone to share facts, dispel common myths and answer questions, World Psoriasis Day is bringing people together for all the right reasons. And those reasons include plenty of laughter for those willing to shake things up and join the fun.
At KIPR, we believe humor has the power to bring people together, regardless of distance or differences. Which is why we’re excited about this year’s World Psoriasis Day theme, “Connected.” It doesn’t take a curious child pointing at your skin to know that psoriasis can make you feel isolated and alone. Fortunately, humor is a universal language that bonds people and offers perspective – no matter how many times your elbows appear to be on a mission to embarrass you in public.
Of course, the magic of laughter won’t steal you away from your favorite couch on its own. You’ve got to make an effort to get involved and leave the shy, lonely you behind. And that’s really the trick here. Where an “Isolated You” might feel all alone with your disease, a more “Connected You” can benefit from the learning and laughter that comes with sharing your experience with others. The perspective you’ll gain is enough to make a half empty glass look like an overflowing pitcher of knee-slapping, tittering mirth.
And to illustrate that point, here are some examples of how a “Connected You” and an “Isolated You” might look at the same challenge in a very different way.
Isolated You: “I can’t believe I got psoriasis.”
Connected You: “I can’t believe there’s enough skin lotion in the world for the 125 million people with psoriasis.”
Isolated You: “I swear this flare-up is going to ruin my weekend.”
Connected You: “I swear this flare-up looks like a Monet painting. Someone alert the local museum!”
Isolated You: “If that guy stares at my skin again I’m going to hide under this seat.”
Connected You: “If that guy stares at my skin again I’m going to offer him my autograph just to mess with him.”
Isolated You: “There’s no way I’m going to that party looking like this.”
Connected You: “There’s no way I’m going to that party looking like this. To the mall we go!”
Isolated You: “If I flake any more I’ll have to hire a snowplow to follow me around.”
Connected You: “All this flaking reminds me I have fewer than 100 shopping days until Christmas.”
Isolated You: “Will anyone even notice if I skip the Halloween party?”
Connected You: “Will anyone even notice if I cover myself in pepperoni and go as a slice of pizza for Halloween?”
